Sha'ar Hanegev teachers keep teaching notwithstanding missile attacks from Gaza
By Donald H. Harrison KIBBUTZ RUHAMA, Israel—In one sense the elementary school students from the 10 kibbutzim and one moshav that make up the Sha’ar Hanegev municipality are luckier than their brothers and sisters in kindergarten , junior high school and high school.
Their temporary school for grades one through six, established at Kibbutz Ruhama two years ago in trailors known as “caravans,” thus far has remained beyond the range of the Kassam missiles fired at Sha'ar Hanegev's other communities by Hamas terrorists in neighboring Gaza.
So, the pupils are safe, but only for the time that they are in school. Most of them live with their parents in kibbutzim that are quite a bit closer to Gaza than Ruhama, meaning missiles may strike their homes, their parents’ kibbutz factories and fields, their cars, and possibly even the buses that transport them to their school here.
On the other hand, kindergartners are schooled on their home kibbutzim or moshav, while junior and senior high school students attend classes in the Sha’ar Hanegev educational complex that also includes Sapir College, a two-year institution.
The educational complex straddles the Sderot-Sha’ar Hanegev city line. Students there are restricted to classrooms that have been “hardened” against rockets, but even with such reinforcement, there is no guarantee that existing junior and senior high school classrooms would remain undamaged in case of a direct hit or a nearby explosion. Several Kassams have fallen in close proximity to the school.
Nancy and I visited Sha’ar Hanegev two days after the American election when rockets still were being fired at the Sha’ar Hanegev group of communities. None were ever so close to us that we had to take cover, but the atmosphere of tension occasioned by the renewed rocket attacks was very much evident.
Sha’ar Hanegev residents associate the bombing with the recent American presidential election because many of them were watching television as President-Elect Barack Obama was delivering his “Yes We Can” speech acknowledging victory when the first of approximately 35 missiles began to hit Sha’ar Hanegev on the Israeli morning of Nov. 5. In the next two days, a declining number of missiles were fired as efforts to restore the “ceasefire” began to bear fruit.
The Kassam attacks were a response by Hamas to the discovery and destruction of a tunnel by the Israel Defense Forces on the evening of November 4th . Several Israeli soldiers were wounded and at least one Hamas terrorist inside the tunnel was killed during a brief battle. The IDF said that the tunnel had been dug from Gaza to Israel in a terrorist plot to kidnap more soldiers such as Gilad Shalev, who has been in Hamas captivity since June of 2006. Hamas swore revenge, prompting Sha’ar Hanegev residents to prepare themselves for the missile attacks.
Whenever there are Kassam rocket attacks on Sha’ar Hanegev during the overnight period, Karolina Arem, the elementary school’s vice principal, goes to work early, messaging the teachers to do the same.

Before the pupils arrive, the teachers and administrators discuss the facts of the attacks and decide what they will say to the pupils in the third through sixth grades. Children in first and second grades are considered too young to understand the ins and outs of the “situation;” so, for them, routines will be changed to provide extra physical activities. Exercise helps children cope with their anxieties and stress, Arem says.
The older children meanwhile will have an opportunity to discuss fully the events of the day in classroom sessions led by the teachers. Facts, as they are known, about the damages caused by the rockets will be told in order to control the rumors among the students, which often envision situations far more catastrophic. The children also are permitted to vent their anger and hatred of the terrorists, whose actions threaten their lives and those of their families. But very careful efforts are made to distinguish the “terrorists” from the general Arab population that lives in Gaza. Teachers stress that Gaza has been taken over by people who bear hatred toward Israel, but that these terrorists are in the minority. Most people in Gaza, they tell the students, wish to live their live in peace, just as they do.
Before Hamas completed its seizure of Gaza in June 2007, there were good relations between some residents of Sha’ar Hanegev and some residents of nearby communities in Gaza. Students went on field trips together, teachers had exchanges, some business people had partnerships. For the most part, this all ended with Hamas’ takeover. Nevertheless, residents find ways to stay in touch across the border. Cell phones are ubiquitous throughout the Middle East.
Someday, someone will give a medal to the teachers, who feel all the stresses and tensions that the students do, but have to put them aside in order to quiet the students and be role models. Many of the teachers commute from the same kibbutzim that the students do, and worry about the safety of their own families. But once at school, they change hats; they become reassuring presences, emotional anchors in the rough seas of warfare.
Arem through interpreter Rita Mymon, an Irish woman who married an Israeli and now has Israeli children, told us that especially in times of stress, dependable routines are very good for children. They need to know that at 8 a.m. they will go to school and at 4 p.m. they will go home, and that at certain times they will have recess and at another time lunch, she said. Sometimes when the missiles strike, parents are tempted to keep the children at home, but the school urges parents not to do so. Let the children go to a more safe place, let them get back into a routine.
Nevertheless, the children cannot be insulated from the situation. They are knowledgeable beyond their years about Hamas, about the rival Fatah group in the West Bank, about peace negotiations, the possible effect of U.S. elections—and many other world events that have an immediate impacts on their environment. Also beyond their years, they take responsibility for many things that occur. Upon news of an attack, they ask about the welfare of their parents and siblings, as well as of friends and acquaintances in the affected kibbutzim and moshav. They worry whether routines at home have been followed in all the excitement. Have the pets been provided for? Did mommy get to work? Is the baby okay?
As pleasant and safe as Ruhama is, the caravans there are only temporary. A new, missile-resistant elementary school is now under construction at the educational complex. Plans for an adjacent $28 million junior high-high school educational complex are being completed, and fundraising for the school already is underway. The Israeli government will provide $14 million of this amount, enough for a basic school without amenities. Aharale Rothstein, principal for the middle and upper schools, says unless $28 million is spent to provide Sha’ar Hanegev students with the best possible education, parents will have no incentive to remain in the area. If families move away, Hamas will have won, he said. The front will be moved from Sha’ar Hanegev to other areas of Israel.
Therefore, said Rothstein, the junior and senior high school not only must be missile resistant, it must also provide the very best education possible for all Sha’ar Hanegev’s students, whether they be slow learners or gifted students.
On the drawing boards are plans borrowing heavily from the San Diego Jewish Academy and from High Tech High School in San Diego for clusters of hardened classes. Vocational courses will be offered to students less inclined toward academics; advanced courses in the sciences will be provided to those with more academic aptitude.
The complex also will include facilities that the entire Sha’ar Hanegev community can take advantage of – an American-style synagogue, for example, which will be something of a rarity in the generally secular kibbutzim, as well as studios for music, art and dance.
Several foundations based in London have pledged or are expected to pledge about $5 million toward the $14 million Rothstein hopes to raise. Discussions with the United Jewish Federation of San Diego look forward to a multiyear fundraising campaign in San Diego County to raise as much as $8 million towards the goal. Rothstein is forever on the lookout for other partners who can participate in saving the lives of Sha’ar Hanegev’s school children.
Among the fundraising activities planned is a 300-mile bike ride from northern Israel down to Sha’ar Hanegev, in which participants will raise money through sponsorships. Among those who are signed up for the trek is Ulla Hadar, the Sha’ar Hanegev correspondent for San Diego Jewish World. People interested in helping secure the future of Sha’ar Hanegev’s students may sign up on line to sponsor her at a website maintained by the United Jewish Federation.

Nancy and I toured the current educational complex with Rothstein, stopping before a crater that had been dug by a Kassam only a few yards from the window of a middle school classroom. That particular missile happened to land on a Saturday, when school is not in session. The explosion shattered window glass and left debris in the classroom, but no one was there to be injured or worse.
We also visited the portable, blue air raid shelters that were installed on the grounds of the school to make it easier for children to get to safety within 15 seconds of the sounding of an air-raid alarm, known as the “Red Alert.” Ironically, the shelters came from former Jewish settlements in Gaza, which the Israeli government had dismantled in what clearly was a futile effort to establish peace in the region.

Rothstein said that about ten years ago, graduating seniors through a riotous party on the campus that left a classroom in shambles. He said he was so angry with the students, he told them that he never wanted to see them again. Like many Isaeli high school graduates, the students subsequently went into the Army. One of their number became an officer, and came to feel regret for the actions of himself and his classmates. He approached Rothstein, telling him that he and classmates would like to do something for the school to earn the principal's foregiveness and to atone for their youthful excesses. The mural of reconciliation was the result.
Perhaps someday on the new campus a new mural will be painted, symbolizing reconciliation between the Jewish kibbutzniks of Israel and the Arab residents of Gaza. Rothstein says he and his colleagues look forward to the day when peace will reign again, and the Gaza-Israel border will simply mark a boundary for neighbors.

SDJA"s “Shelly and Kelli” Present Workshop at National Mathematics Conference
SAN DIEGO (Press Release)—San Diego Jewish Academy master teachers Shelly Moses and Kelli Cox presented the workshop “Outsmarting your SMART Board" at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Regional Conference in Reno, Nevada.
Using the SMART Board, front projection interactive whiteboard technology implemented in every classroom at San Diego Jewish Academy, “Shelly and Kelli” (1st and 2nd grades Language Arts, and 1st and 5th grade Mathematics, respectively) helped over 70 educators explore the many ways to use interactive technology in conjunction with low-tech manipulatives as a teaching tool for whole class lessons, differentiated instruction, individual centers, and student assessment.
San Diego Jewish Academy has one of the most technologically advanced campuses around the country. From SMART Boards in every classroom to more than 750 fully networked computers throughout the school, faculty and students use these tools to enhance their education.
The conference, which centered on the theme "Math: It's a Sure Bet," brought together math educators from preschool through university levels to examine different methods for evaluating students' understanding of mathematics.
The conference offered more than 250 sessions and workshops covering all levels, pre-K-grade 12, and challenged educators to add to their math knowledge and increase their instructional skills. In the era of balancing No Child Left Behind with state and district accountability, the conference offered solutions and helped teachers plan lessons that motivate their students to become better math thinkers.
"Mathematics teaching is a challenging job. The regional conferences provide teachers with opportunities to grow professionally and prepare for the classroom," said NCTM President Henry (Hank) Kepner. "The conference also allows both new and experienced teachers to share ideas, develop new ones, and think creatively about how to stimulate and challenge students to learn more, and more advanced, mathematics."
"The task of teaching has changed. We no longer simply transmit information. We must be receptive to new expectations, new tools, and new ways of teaching and learning mathematics," said NCTM Executive Director Jim Rubillo. "The regional conferences provide an opportunity for both new and seasoned teachers to grow professionally, reflect on the art of teaching, and gain ideas to use in their classrooms."

The San Diego section, Council of Jewish Women will hold its annual meeting and installation of officers at a luncheon to be given, Monday, May 1st at 12:30 at the El Cortez Hotel. Mrs. David Doctor will be installed as president for the ensuing year.
Mrs. Harris Rubel and Mrs. George Solomon are co-chairmen of the luncheon and will be assisted by Mesdames Harry Kaufman, Albert Morris and Alex J. Kaufman.
A delightful musical program featuring Irene Cantos, star of S.D. Starlight Opera will be the program for the afternoon. Reservations may be made by calling any member of the committee.
Council House was established in October 1949, as part of their project of service to Foreign Born. To date 25 families have been house and 11 more are scheduled to arrive. Mrs. Edward Cherney of Del Mar is Port and Dock chairman and is assisted by Mrs. R. H. Smith and Mrs. Ehrlich, Hospitality Chairmen; Mrs. A. Hutler and Mrs. H. Haimson, Housing; Mrs. Phillip Rand, Education. Mrs. Harris Rubel and Mrs. David Doctor are co-chairmen of Council House.
The “Thrift Shop” located at 1747 Logan Ave. was established to help finance Council House. This project is headed by Mrs. Daniel Lowenthal, assisted by Mrs. Frances Berenson and Mrs. David Horowitz and a staff of volunteer workers.
The Council of Jewish Women were hostesses on April 21 to the San Diego County Federation of Women’s Clubs at their annual convention held at the El Cortez Hotel. Mrs. Sam Waldman was chairman of the day assisted by Mrs. Mack Esterson, Mrs. Sam Sosna and Mrs. Jennie Burnett.

Tifereth Israel Sisterhood will close a very successful season at a gala Luncheon and program at the Tifereth Israel Synagogue,30th and Howard Sts., on Tuesday, May 9th, at 12 o’clock.
After a delicious luncheon of unusual delicacies, prepared under the capable managership of chairman Mrs. Sam Sklar and her able committee a novel and hilarious musical variety show will be presented.

It gives Kitchen utensils a “lift” into the aesthetic realm of Art and Music.” Come and hear this unusual band composed of 18 ladies who have converted the lowliest kitchen gadgets into an instrument of rhythm and melody.

Sunday, April 23, an election of officers was held by the Hebrew Home for the aged. New and re-elected officers are Sam Addleson, President; Zel Greenberg, 1st Vice President; Max Maisel, 2nd Vice President; Ruth Newman, Recording Secretary; Freda Nestor, Corresponding Secretary; Carl Esenoff, Treasurer; and Bernice Esenoff, Financial Secretary.
Additional trustees elected for 3 years were Milo Berenson, M.S. Berlin, Eddie Bland, Maxwell Kaufman, Murray Goodrich, and Rose Neumann. Sol Chenkin was elected to serve vacated balance of two years.
During the meeting a spontaneous gift of $500 was given to the Home by Beatrice Obert of San Deigo.

KIBBUTZ RUHAMA, Israel—In one sense the elementary school students from the 10 kibbutzim and one moshav that make up the Sha’ar Hanegev municipality are luckier than their brothers and sisters in kindergarten , junior high school and high school.
Before the pupils arrive, the teachers and administrators discuss the facts of the attacks and decide what they will say to the pupils in the third through sixth grades. Children in first and second grades are considered too young to understand the ins and outs of the “situation;” so, for them, routines will be changed to provide extra physical activities. Exercise helps children cope with their anxieties and stress, Arem says.
Nancy and I toured the current educational complex with Rothstein, stopping before a crater that had been dug by a Kassam only a few yards from the window of a middle school classroom. That particular missile happened to land on a Saturday, when school is not in session. The explosion shattered window glass and left debris in the classroom, but no one was there to be injured or worse.
